7 Signs Your Pool Needs Resurfacing (Before It Gets Expensive)

Pool plaster does not fail overnight. It wears down gradually under sun, chemicals, and thousands of wet-dry cycles — and the earlier you catch it, the less you spend. These are the seven signs we look for on every inspection.

1. Rough texture underfoot

Healthy plaster feels smooth. When the cement paste erodes, the aggregate beneath is exposed and the surface becomes sandpaper-rough. If your kids come out of the pool with scraped toes, the finish is at the end of its life.

2. Gray, blotchy mottling

Uneven gray or dark streaks are usually mineral staining or calcium deposits that have bonded to the surface. Acid washing can buy a year or two, but it also removes plaster and accelerates the next failure.

3. Rust spots or cracks

Small rust-colored spots often mean rebar is getting wet through the plaster. Structural cracks need to be opened, repaired, and sealed before any new finish goes on.

4. Hollow spots

Tap the plaster with a pool pole. A hollow sound means the plaster has separated from the gunite shell and can pop loose at any time.

5. Falling waterline tile

Tile failure and plaster failure usually happen together, because both depend on the bond beam and on water chemistry. Plan to address them in one project.

6. Chemistry that will not stay balanced

Old plaster is porous. It absorbs and releases chemicals, which makes the water harder to balance and increases your monthly chemical cost.

7. Age

If your plaster is 12–15 years old in our climate, it is due. Quartz lasts a bit longer, and pebble can last 20 years or more.

If you recognize more than one of these signs, schedule a free inspection. We will tell you honestly whether the pool can wait another season or whether resurfacing now will prevent a much larger repair.
