Building a new pool is exciting, but it is also a construction project with inspections, engineering, and a sequence that cannot be rushed. Here is what the process looks like when we build a pool in the San Fernando Valley or greater Los Angeles.
Step 1: Design (1–3 weeks)
We walk the yard, talk about how you will use the pool — laps, lounging, kids, entertaining — and develop a layout with shape, depth, steps, Baja shelf, spa, and equipment location. Setbacks from property lines, easements, and slopes all shape the design.
Step 2: Engineering and permits (3–8 weeks)
Structural engineering and, on hillside lots, a soils report are prepared and submitted with the permit application. The City of Los Angeles, Burbank, Glendale, and LA County each have their own plan-check timelines. We handle the submittal and corrections.
Step 3: Excavation, steel, and plumbing (1–2 weeks)
The pool is laid out and dug, rebar is tied to the engineer's specifications, and plumbing is run to the equipment pad. Each stage is inspected before the next begins.
Step 4: Shotcrete and curing (1–4 weeks)
The shell is sprayed with shotcrete and then kept wet while it cures. This waiting period is important and cannot be skipped.
Step 5: Tile, coping, decking, and equipment (2–4 weeks)
Waterline tile and coping are installed, the deck or pavers go in, and the pump, filter, heater, lights, and automation are set on the pad.
Step 6: Plaster, fill, and start-up (1–2 weeks)
The interior finish is applied and the pool is filled immediately. We balance the water and walk you through the brushing and chemistry schedule for the first month.
All told, expect roughly 8–14 weeks of construction after permits are issued. Starting the design conversation in winter is the best way to be swimming by early summer.
